My People Are Free is a collage that features 19 amazing leaders (for June 19th) from the Black community in American history who have made incredible contributions to various fields. I embedded their names in a Harriet Tubman quote, "My people are free."
This art features notable individuals such as Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Michael Jackson, Josephine Baker, Tina Turner, George Washington Carver, Anita Hill, Langston Hughes, Suzanne De Passe, Stevie Wonder, Gabrielle Jordan, Katherine Johnson, Shonda Rhimes, Miles Davis, Richard Allen, W.E.B. DuBois, Whoopi Goldberg, David Hammond, and Toni Morrison.
I love incorporating symbolism in my work, especially by using colors that represent the Pan-African Flag and West African traditions. You'll notice this in the pieces I've created.

This collage is a tribute to the important aspects of Black history and African culture, and each color has a unique meaning that represents our past and future. Red symbolizes the struggles and sacrifices for freedom, while Black represents the lives lost and the dark past. Yellow represents a bright future and the wealth of Africa. The background collage showcases these colors, along with black, white, and grey, which all have cultural significance in West African cultures. White represents purity and festive occasions, while Black symbolizes mourning, spiritual energy, and maturity. Grey/Silver represents cleaning, healing, peace, and joy and is associated with the moon. This collage captures the essence of Juneteenth, a celebration of our ancestors, peace, healing, and respect for those who fought for our freedom.
