"Sunflower" is a deeply personal acrylic painting on canvas, a project that evolved over seven years. It employs diverse methods and techniques, culminating in what I consider a self-portrait. The painting depicts a Black woman offering flowers to another Black woman. This act symbolizes recognition and appreciation, countering the often stereotypical perceptions of Black women as aggressive, hard, masculine, or angry. In my portrayal, the woman's expression is neutral, her gaze direct. She holds a flower, embodying a moment of serene giving.
Her features are delicately washed, with a slight translucence that accentuates her defined curls. The stark yellow of the flower stands out, providing a vibrant contrast. This piece is more than just art; it's a representation of my identity and a commentary on how Black women are frequently overlooked or misunderstood, reduced to mere reflections of societal prejudices and stereotypes.
"Sunflower" is a tribute, an act of giving not just to myself but to all Black women. It's a celebration of our worth, our complexities, and our resilience, challenging the narratives imposed upon us and embracing our true selves
